Well, it could be argued than when most other people are being completely ridiculous it does justify me doing the same. Besides, I'm just going for asymmetric balancing rather than have an all-rounder, the faction has the best tactical assets and the worst strategic assets i.e. no superweapons, no large scale fleets - ships operate alone or in pairs- smaller numbers than everyone else and so on.
It could but that's not rational, as such a decision would be influenced not by strategy or tactics but inadequacy. If you are personally feeling inadequate that is one thing, but for Anc to have yet another faction that compensates for it with larger and larger designs or more of the same indicates a larger problem. Also your statement about having the best tactical assets is wrong. The flux often operates it's ships singly or in pairs, My faction more of ten then not barring circumstances does the same. I might add I have yet to use any of my three superweapon slots. If anything this means you might be in good rational company.
The best tactical assets was not probably the best way to put it, but rather that the level at which they can bring the highest density of force is at the tactical level, whereas the larger strategic level their forces are collectively very dilluted and, individually, mediocre at best. I don't see how the Flux or your faction operating ships in pairs is relevant as both have significantly superior spacecraft that carry thousands of light spacecraft.
So to compensate their planetary forces are relatively ahead of the curve of most factions, while not using a lot of handwavium like a lot of people do. I do not compensate by having "larger and larger" designs, in fact the planetary forces of my faction are relatively one of the smallest (i.e. no heavy tanks, no mech, no mobile fortresses, etc.) so I have no idea what you're talking about. Individually the tactical assets may be more powerful than several other factions', because the balance exists on a higher scale.
The other option would be to have a faction that is bad both in a strategic and tactical level, which wouldn't be fun to RP would it?
